4 Tips for Keeping Up with New Digital Marketing Trends

powerchordKeeping up with digital marketing trends can sometimes feel like a walking nightmare for brands and marketers alike. For example… A new algorithm is rolled out. A best practice is replaced by a new automation tool. Facebook loses track of so much of my data that I don’t even care anymore (not really – you definitely should care).

“I say let’s skip wearables and go straight to implants.” Now, I’m not technologically averse, like some of my colleagues.  On the contrary: I say let’s skip wearables and go straight to implants. I’m just that kind of person, but that doesn’t mean I don’t find staying ahead of digital trends daunting.

As a marketer, I am always on the lookout for the latest trends that will affect and shape the marketing strategies of myself and the brands I work with. I am sure I’m not alone when I find myself asking: How can I stay ahead of the competition amidst an ever-changing digital marketing and technology landscape?

4 simple tips for staying up to date with digital marketing trends

Sign up for the right email newsletters

One of the easiest ways to stay informed is to stay updated with MarTech newsletters. These emails not only offer the potential to inspire you with content, but their designs might tempt you to innovate your own emails and/or marketing collateral based on what resonated with you.

Here are a few whose content consistently speaks to me:

Implement collaborative sharing

Being a tech-savvy marketer doesn’t necessarily require fancy tools and research. It can start by having a conversation. Every Monday, during our weekly marketing meeting, my team shares articles, pieces of design, or anything that managed to hold our attention. This allows us the opportunity to share what stands out and encourages conversation that helps cultivate new ideas. This is especially helpful if you’ve hit a wall, need a little inspiration, or a hand reining in a project.

Take advantage of your digital partnerships

Use the digital experts that you partner with to stay on top of trends and stay informed. Don’t hesitate to tap on the shoulders of the experts around you — asking questions like, “How can this service reach my customers” or “What should I know about this new trend?”

In addition to helping you execute campaigns and drive business, most partners are also an amazing resource for strategy and overall industry information. We might be a little biased, but we believe that helping our clients stay up to date on the aspects of digital that can truly impact their business is one of the most crucial parts of our job.

Network and attend tech meetups

I can’t write this article without mentioning the power of Meetup and other networking sites. There is an entire community of marketing professionals and experts looking to share their knowledge, insights, and perspective to help you grow your brand and career.

Meetups also allow you to filter by interest and location, so you can find an event that meshes perfectly with your needs and interests. PowerChord recently started hosting our own digital marketing meetup every month and we are always impressed with our participants.

They are eager to learn, network, and teach!

Digital marketing doesn’t have to be scary

The advent of digital has changed the way brands do business forever, and although it’s hard to keep up with, there’s no excuse for being uninformed when there’s so much information available. All of this technology can seem scary, but it doesn’t have to be if you keep an open mind and remember that change is all about perspective.

In a world where art created by an algorithm can sell for $400,000, I know the importance of remaining agile and embracing new technology. While fear of the unknown and resistance to change has meant death for many businesses, careers, and even baseball teams — remaining proactive is always a step in the right direction.
