Sustainable packaging uses materials and manufacturing techniques that minimize energy usage, decrease the use of new resources, and reduce the volume of carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere. Today, an overwhelming majority of consumers (68 percent) say they’re willing to pay more for sustainable packaging. Furthermore, 42 percent of Americans say they seek out products that are recyclable or that use sustainable materials when making day-to-day purchases. Because of this, 73 percent of businesses across the US are currently investing more in sustainable packaging in the coming year.

The print component of “Sustainable Packaging” is distributed within today’s edition of USA TODAY. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets. To explore the digital version of the campaign

Long-time sustainability activist Lauren Singer graces the cover of the print publication. In an exclusive interview, the environmental influencer explains how going zero-waste is a step-by-step process. “It makes an impact even if it’s just one little thing,” Singer says in the Q&A. “Even decreasing your overall waste by 10 percent can remove hundreds of pounds of trash from landfills per year and that’s major. Every positive step is positive when it comes to mitigating climate change and having a more sustainable impact on the planet, so it really is about just trying one thing and if it doesn’t work try something else.”

This campaign was made possible with the support of the: Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Green Business Bureau, PMMI, Consumer Goods Forum, Flexible Packaging Association, Lauren Singer, Kathryn Kellow and more!
