Smarty Releases 193+ Million Addresses in New US Master Address List

Smarty, a leader in location data intelligence announces the release of its new US Master Address List, a comprehensive dataset of 193 million standardized and verified primary and secondary addresses that are all deliverable by the USPS. With new construction, the list will soon top 200 million.

The Smarty US Master Address List is the most complete and accurate list of mailable US addresses available. Additional data points like whether the delivery point is residential or commercial, parent addresses and associated apartments or suites, shared delivery points, ZIP+4 Codes, and FIPS Codes all provide valuable business insights. Addresses can also feature a persistent unique identifier for superior address data management, reporting and analysis.

“Across the US, street names change, as do city, ZIP Code, and zoning boundaries. This leaves hundreds of thousands of additional updated addresses and address components every month.”

“Smarty validates and standardizes over a trillion addresses annually, so we are well suited to create the cleanest, most authoritative, up-to-date list of US addresses available,” explains Jeffrey Duncan, Senior Technical Product Manager. “As Industry experts, we understand idiosyncrasies and edge cases that come with address data. We know how to fix the address problems that other list providers don’t know exist.”

The address list can be used for analyzing target-market penetration rates, identifying underserved areas, identifying and targeting apartments and eliminating duplicates and clutter within data, and by address list brokers who need the cleanest, most complete US address dataset available.

“Maintaining such a list requires ongoing effort. Many new addresses are added to the Smarty address list each month due to new construction alone,” continued Duncan. “Across the US, street names change, as do city, ZIP Code, and zoning boundaries. This leaves hundreds of thousands of additional updated addresses and address components every month.”

Alias Addresses also provide difficulty in the battle for clean data. Alias addresses occur when the USPS recognizes multiple addresses for the same delivery point, known as a shared delivery point. A shared delivery point could have a dozen or more addresses that look nothing alike, but can all represent the same home due to technicalities in how the USPS operates. For example, the single delivery point on the corner of 31st St and 7th Ave in New York City all share the following three, deliverable addresses:

200 W 31ST ST, NEW YORK, NY, 10001
370 7TH AVE, NEW YORK, NY, 10001
7 PENN PLZ, NEW YORK, NY, 10001

You can imagine the confusion, waste, and fraud risks associated with shared delivery points. Many delivery points in the United States have more than one valid delivery address.

“Alias addresses routinely result in duplicate mailings, over-reporting assets, inaccuracies in your database, and misrepresentations in market penetration data,” concluded Duncan. “That is why we developed SmartyKey, a persistent unique identifier, for release with the US Master Address List. By associating all the alias address variations with a unique, persistent identifier we help our customers eliminate duplicates, reduce waste, save time, and improve address data integrity.”

The address list is offered as a full national list via download as an annual subscription with quarterly updates. Address lists by state are also available.
