Smarty Named Among Utah’s Top Workplaces

Smarty Named as Data Intelligence Leader Across Address Verification and E-Commerce Categories

Smarty, a leader in location data intelligence, has been named among Top Workplaces for 2022. A total of 155 businesses were recognized. Smarty ranked 17th of the 76 companies with fewer than 150 employees. The list is based entirely on employee surveys administered by a third-party service. Anonymous results measure 15 culture driving elements like alignment, execution, and connection.

In contrast to the record-breaking volume of resignations in the tech industry, Smarty’s year-over-year employee retention remains above 93 percent. The company credits its fun culture as a primary ingredient to successfully attract new staff. Team building trips to TopGolf, go-kart racing, theatrical plays, laser tag, and even Disney are staples, as are the regular offsite team lunches.

“We are honored by the recognition as one of Utah’s Top Workplaces, confirming what we’ve known for years,” shared Doug Edwards, President of Smarty. “Significant, thoughtful effort goes into creating an authentic culture that enhances communication and understanding across the organization. Our approach successfully drives individual growth, fulfillment, and excitement.”

While “Fun” is a big part of the appeal and the first of Smarty’s three core values, employees credit values of “Outwardness” and “Wizardry” for why they stay long-term. Outwardness is a principle taught by the Arbinger Institute for seeing people as people rather than as objects, tools, or obstacles. “Wizardry” is a Smarty term to indicate company-facilitated skills development for becoming the best version of oneself in current and future roles.

“Everyone wants to be seen and treated like people, not numbers. We desire an optimistic outlook, opportunities to advance, and professional development,” shared Jeffrey Duncan, Senior Technical Product Manager and 11-year Smarty veteran. “We need realistic expectations and new challenges without soul-crushing stress. Everyone needs validation. Fun, Outwardness, and Wizardry help Smarty deliver those needs.”
